Age-related Macular Degeneration

At The Eye Doctors P.C., we are dedicated to helping patients manage and treat age-related macular degeneration, one of the leading causes of vision loss in older adults. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic eye disease that damages the macula, which is the part of your eye that allows you to see things directly in front of you. It typically affects people over 50 and progresses gradually. While it does not cause total blindness, macular degeneration can make it difficult to perform everyday tasks like reading, driving, or recognizing faces.

Types of AMD

There are two main types of AMD:

  • Dry macular degeneration: This is the most common form, affecting about 85%–90% of those with AMD. It occurs when the macula gradually thins over time, leading to a slow decline in central vision. Small clumps of protein called drusen can form under the retina, which is often the first sign of AMD. Dry AMD progresses slowly but can eventually cause significant vision impairment if not monitored.
  • Wet macular degeneration: Though less common, wet AMD is more severe. It happens when abnormal blood vessels grow beneath the retina and leak fluid or blood, causing rapid vision loss. This form of AMD requires prompt treatment to prevent further damage.

Treatment for age-related macular degeneration

Our eye doctors work closely with each patient to create a treatment plan tailored to their specific needs. We provide regular monitoring, education on lifestyle changes, and access to advanced treatments to help manage the condition and protect your vision. We also offer ongoing support for patients with advanced macular degeneration, helping them adapt to their vision changes with low vision rehabilitation, visual aids, and other resources.

For those with early-stage dry macular degeneration, lifestyle adjustments like quitting smoking, eating a diet rich in leafy greens, and taking eye health supplements can help slow the progression of the disease. For wet macular degeneration, medications known as anti-VEGF injections can help reduce the growth of abnormal blood vessels and slow vision loss. In some cases of wet AMD, laser treatment may be used to seal leaking blood vessels and prevent further damage to the retina.

Kristin and Jackie are the best! My sunglasses broke while away from home. Kristin’s help, calm, and patient voice was a pleasant experience! She kept me informed on how to mail them back there and get a warranty placement. Took out the stressful situation. Jackie was able to Fed X them to me. Eye DR’s employees are a great team. Excellent customer service.

I was a long time customer from 1997 to 2020. I stayed with them during moves. I always felt like I had a good experience. I recommend them to anyone looking for someone. My kids that live in the area still use them. I only left because I moved to a different state a long ways away.

I have been with the Eye Drs for years. Why you ask? Atmosphere is warm and welcoming. Staff is helpful, knowledgeable, and accommodating. The staff at the desk to the Eye Drs are a team and it shows in the attitude of the staff. They create a family feel in the clinic. The Eye Drs are thorough. They offer a variety of tests to check eye needs such as cataracts. The glasses are a little more expensive but you can take your script elsewhere. I prefer to stay because I know the quality will be of high standards. They work with you to get the fit right. The variety of glasses is a little higher in cost due to brands. They do offer a small variety for lower cost but not as cute or trendy. Contacts okay you can order them. Restroom available. Parking and handicapped parking accessible.
